Jodhpur was then ruled by a benevolent king, Maharaja Umaid Singh Ji, who came to be known as the builder of modern Jodhpur. The Maharaja promoted formation of a club where the select group could enjoy the evening, playing tennis or cards or sit sipping their favorite drink, interact on matter of common interest or just gossip to their delight. The idea of Umed Club was thus born.
Though we do not presently have a full and authentic record of the earlier years of the Club, it was perhaps started in 1922 with a membership of about 22 persons. With the Club not having a building of its own, Sumer Chand Mehta, a founder member, spared a part of the premises of his temple, called Muthaji temple, for the Club to start functioning. Later Maharaja Sahib gifted 6 acres of land opposite Raikabagh Palace to the Club. A beautifully structured club house was built on this land. The Club continued to function from these premises for over two decades. In the days before the Independence, the Club had a membership that was limited mostly to the highly placed publicmen, officers and the rich elite. The Club had an aura of exclusiveness, but its social influence was limited. After Independence, influenced by the democratic wave, the Club began to embrace membership from a wider base in the society.
The Club shifted to its new premises in 1960, after necessary addition to the premises wereeffected by the PWD. The Club has since then continued in these premises, although for anyone who was a member of the Club in 1960, it will be difficult even to recognize the old Club today.
UMED CLUB today is counted amongst the top elite clubs in the country and is visited by the who's who. Under the enlightening guidance of our Chief Patron His Highness Maharaja ShriGaj Singh Ji of Jodhpur, the club is ever improving on its facilities and infrastructure. UMED CLUB today is a synonym to family club or next home for the members. Situated in the lap of Royal Heritage city of Jodhpur, mere steps from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, UMED CLUB is spread across 16000 Sqr. Mtr. (appx) of lush green environs. The ever increasing number of morning strollers at the lush green lawns of the Club is a happy sight. The good number of enthusiastic members in their sports attire at the Badminton Court, screeching their souls on the wooden floor, banging sound of squash balls at the Squash Court and hard hit volleys at the Turf Tennis Courts is encouraging. The ocean blue contours and splash in the blue water of the Swimming Pool sends down a serene satisfaction. The health conscious ones working out at the Gym and if that is not all to sweat them out a dash at the Sauna, Steam and Chill bath would do the rest for them.
The Billiards/Snooker table adds magnanimity to the expanse of sports facilities. The turf Tennis Court provides sight of serene volleys and perfect aces.
The number of parties being organized at the Club and the heartening number of members and their families cooling their heels at the Family Lawns and the staff serving to their best makes the evening at the Club a lively affair. The Millennium Restaurant with its cozy ambience provides the perfect setting for a tete-a-tete or a business lunch or formal dinner. To cater to the demand of similar atmosphere for parties the New Millennium and Café Umed satiate that demand.
Tropicana Bar shelves a variety of liquor, scotch, vodka, gin, beer with varied munching and biting options. It is thronged by members, their guest in good numbers every evening. The various zones of the Tropicana, AC smoking, non-smoking, open lawn niche, the imperial corridor offers selection of places to sit back, relax and sip at the drink.
aturday Movie, Cricket & other sports matches on large screen and Sunday Tambola (Housie) is non-negotiable choice of the family members. Even weekdays, the number of parties and members presence at the family lawns, auditorium lawn and every other corner of the Club is the mirror of liking, enthusiasm and involvement of members.
The 24 guest rooms of the Club, equipped with everything to ensure comfort, have been a choice of stay for various members of the affiliate clubs and also for the guests of our members. The thick greenery and exquisite plants all around the club has been the attraction and a cause of wonder.
